| Note on substrate treatment | Sand smooth wood surfaces along the grain, clean thoroughly, and remove any escaping wood constituents such as resins and pitch pockets. Thoroughly wash hardwoods, exotic woods, and resinous softwoods with thinner (e.g., universal thinner) before painting. Sand grayed, weathered wood surfaces down to the sound, load-bearing wood and thoroughly clean. Remove old coatings such as varnishes and thick-layer glazes down to the absorbent wood surface. Sand, clean, and test for compatibility with firmly adhering thin-layer glazes. |
